We are living in an “amazing day” and in an incredible“age.” I am not sure what they will say about this generation. But trust me, it will be interesting!
Did you ever hear the expression, “Oh, my “delicate” ears?” I bet you haven’t heard it lately. And if you NEVER HEARD IT, that would NOT SURPRISE ME, either. Even Google, had no idea what I was referring to! Google preferred the words “VIRGIN EARS.”
Some would say it is about our lack of “sensitivity” today. Our sensitivity that ONCE WAS, but seemingly, IS NO MORE…
Growing up as I did “in what was then considered to be” a very “tumultuous time,” it all – seems like nothing today.
What did they say, “Sex, love and rock n’ roll?” Remember “old swivel hips!” The lyrics of some songs were banned!
Those days were mild in comparison and now are referred to – as being the “good old days!”
Remember the hit song, “Que Sera, Sera” by Doris Day in 1964?
I know, right now some of you are thinking, “Whatever will be, will be – the futures not ours to see, que sera, sera.”
“When I was just a little girl, I asked my mother, what will I be…yep, you know the lyrics…” Some of you could finish the song out…
What does it take to appall us and sicken us? What causes shock, offends and disgusts us?
What today, do we call disgraceful?
Que sera, sera!
Is there anything that offends the moral senses…or have the moral senses deteriorated in such a fashion…that we simply look beyond them?
MYOB Mind Your Own Business, Look the other way…Remember…People who live in glass houses! Anything and everything goes, today, or so they say!
The Report of the Philadelphia Grand Jury called “The Philadelphia Report” is made public and few if any, are surprised! Scandal and things that are scandalous, have been around us for a long time, even in the church! Life goes on…Que sera, sera…
Are we becoming “numb?” De-sensitized?”
Have we developed a “deaf ear?”
“To each his own,” isn’t that what people say?
Well, the followers of Jesus at their best of times – have understood that life does not travel in straight lines.
There have always been curves in the road up a head. And there are peaks and valleys to be overcome.
No matter how hard we try to make things straighten out, we don’t have that kind of power. Only God does!
Cancer, a broken relationship, a sick child, an accident, a job loss, conflict, an international financial crisis, an abusive spouse, bad news, bad memories, a death…these are not straight line problems, sometimes it feels like we are wandering through life in a maze.
“The words of eternal life” aren’t just the ones that fit on a desk plaque or that get tossed around in some political campaigns.
They are not always simple, cut, easy to hear. “The words of eternal life” remind us that life is not always plain; solutions to our problems are not always easy and straightforward.
We often find ourselves winding around some pretty convoluted pathways – that are confusing, frightening, difficult and maze-like.
But we hope and pray that somewhere on our path, truth can be heard and we are in fact, on the right path!
Wow if I talked to either one of my parents, they way “kids” talk today, I do not think I would physically be here. And I am talking about “kids” in their thirties, forties and beyond. “Kids” that should know better!
What has happened?
Have we become “that permissive?”
Does “anything and everything” go today?
So, when Jesus started talking about eating and drinking his blood, people started fleeing his sides.
His numbers more than diminished, they were more than – cut in half… People steered clear from him. They no longer followed him.
I am sure there are lessons to be learned by us today…I am sure there has to be a better way…
And, I do not think or believe, that it has anything to with, turning our heads away and saying Que sera, sera…whatever will be, will be.
Amen.
