05232021 – Pentecost!

This is not just any day!

This day has been hailed as the Birthday of the early Church.

Prior to this – the frightened disciples were in hiding.  They feared for their very lives and existence.

After the Day of Pentecost, they start to find their voices, they start to find their courage and they slowly but surely continue the ministry begun by one Jesus of Nazareth.

There was something about this day.

This is not just any day!

Pentecost was a day charged with tons of drama and tons of significance.

There was a lot of pyrotechtics.  Cool!

Fire appeared to be dancing everywhere…flames doing the MACARENA…over people’s heads.

But there was more – the audio – was off-the-charts…AND almost deafening…

Whooshing and Swooshing sounds, winds sounding like multple trains racing into a terminal – all at the same hour…and excitement and smiles all around…UBERS were everywhere.

The disciples STRANGELY seemed to be empowered, unfettered, unchained, and unshackled…by this whole event.

It was, as if, they were set free.  There was a boldness, a swagger, a bravado…that was NOT present just 12 little hours earlier…

While “The Moment At The Creche” was lovely and wholesome and sweet – it was “delicately hushed with the morning light.”  No angels, no wisemen, just a mother and child and animals desperately seeking their feeding trough…and wanting it back.

We know that the morning of the Resurrection was a morning filled with chaos and tons of questions.  People running to and fro…a lot of shouting and yelling…and some hollering.

Women crying and sobbing…HARD!

Soldiers running…

A large stone removed…There was an empty tomb, but WHAT was THAT supposed to MEAN, and WHAT did it SIGNIFY?

Linens neatly folded and lying separately in a pile…like someone had “all the time in the world.”

And then, there was the spotty resurrection appearances…one in Jerusalem, another one on the Emmaus Road…some during the day, some at night…

And these appearances continued on for weeks…but confusion and disbelief and uncertainty remained everywhere.

THEN, there was the DAY of the Ascension, on the 40th day, as Jesus was taken away from them…

They were looking intently into the sky as HE was going, when suddenly two men “dressed in white” stood beside them.

Men of Galilee, they said, why do you stand here, looking INTO THE SKY?  This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back to you -in the same way as you have seen him GO…

AGAIN, more uncertainty, what did IT all mean?

THEN, they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is “NEAR the city,” a Sabbath day’s journey away…

We ASSUME, it was back into hiding…  closed doors, locked doors, fear being everywhere…AGAIN!

But THIS DAY was DIFFERENT.  Pentecost COMES IN with a bang…with a hoot and holler…and some EPIC fireworks.

WITH a rushing noise and a MIGHTY wind, tongues as of flame, an outpouring of the languages “of the whole Roman world” SPOKEN BY “unlearned-simple-backwards-Galilean-day-workers” making-far-less-than-$15.00-an-hour …mistaken for common every day DRUNKS…and get this, it was only 9 o’clock in the morning…

But HEY, it was a festival weekend…it was Pentecost, the HARVEST FESTIVAL of the Jews…And you know what happens at Summerfest, Festa Italiana, Irish Fest, German Fest, Harley Fest, Bastille Days, Mexicana Fiesta, Polish Fest and Juneteenth Days, there is A LITTLE EMBIBING that goes on there…and I am sure, some foreign tongues…

Noone PRESENT (that day) would have ever guessed that “WHAT HAPPENED IN JERUSALEM” would ONE DAY becomes its own moment of commemoration and celebration…and that it would STILL be celebrated some 2,000 years later.

AGAIN, no one would have ever-guessed that a fully distinct WORLD RELIGION would evolve…the seeds were THERE…but they were just some seeds.  But happen, IT DID!

THIS DAY was different.  THIS DAY was like a new beginning…the old things were passing away…and new things were happening…old men were dreaming dreams…and young men were probably bellying up to the local watering holes…celebrating.

It was Pentecost…and who knew – we could turn it into yet ANOTHER HOLY DAY?

But Heck BEAVER, we turned it into a whole season!
